So'ton v Chelsea: Che Adams rattled Jorginho by chipping ball into his face

Southampton's Adams

Che Adams had Jorginho wound up with a slightly cheeky act during Chelsea’s trip to Southampton on Tuesday.

Chelsea found themselves ahead at St. Mary’s through Raheem Sterling, but a fine performance resulted in Southampton turning the game on its head.

Adams proved a nightmare all night for Chelsea, who couldn’t deal with the striker physically or aerially throughout the contest.

He was everywhere for Southampton and put in a tireless display, despite not getting on the scoresheet himself, in what was a selfless performance.

Fans of the Saints will be made up to see the efforts of the 26-year-old who made it a difficult evening for the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva, as Chelsea struggled to keep a tight ship while playing a back four formation.

But one man who was truly wound up by Adams was Jorginho, who felt the full force of the Scotland international when he attempted to win the ball back off the Italian midfielder, but tripped him up in the process.

Adams was clearly unimpressed with the way Jorginho tumbled to the floor after feeling the contact from the challenge, and let his frustrations bleed out onto the pitch by slyly chipping the ball up and into Jorginho’s face while he lay on the floor.

It was seriously cheeky and even a little risky. Check out the clip below.

Just as Jorginho is trying to get back to his feet, Adams vents his frustration by dinking the ball at his face.

As a result, the Italy international goes tumbling to the floor for a second time, clutching his face like he’d just taken a hefty whack.

Clearly, Adams’ dink had nowhere near enough power to cause any real damage, nor is it likely that there was any true malice attached to it.

However, he was a tad fortunate that Michael Oliver didn’t take further action. It could well have been seen as unsportsmanlike and potentially dangerous. It prompted a strong reaction from Chelsea’s players. Check it out below.

Of course, though, it wasn’t and seeing Jorginho hurl himself back to the ground like that prompted memories of when Sir Alex Ferguson proclaimed Robin van Persie could’ve been killed when his face was struck by a ball while playing for Manchester United, back in 2012.

The moment where Adams lost his cool somewhat cannot detract from an otherwise impressive performance, though, and one that was infectious throughout Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

After going 1-0 down in the 23rd minute, Southampton dug in and took the game to the visitors, with goals from Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong securing a huge three points.
