Chelsea have 'made enquiry' for £130k-a-week 'fighter' at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel applauds his players

Chelsea have ‘made an enquiry’ for Wilfried Zaha and Crystal Palace have refused to rule out the possibility of a late move to Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The west Londoners registered their second win of the season when they overcame Leicester City on Saturday, but head coach Thomas Tuchel could freshen up his squad ahead of Thursday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

What’s the latest news involving Zaha?

According to MailOnline, Chelsea are weighing up whether to make a move for Zaha during the closing stages of the summer window.

The report suggests the Blues are long-term suitors of the 24-cap Ivory Coast international and questioned Palace over the possibility of a switch last summer as well as a matter of months ago.

Zaha has entered the final 12 months of his Selhurst Park contract, which is worth £130,000-per-week, leading to doubts over where his long-term future lies.

Chelsea are not the only Premier League side showing an interest as transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that Arsenal are also keeping tabs on the winger’s situation, although a switch to Mikel Arteta’s side is not in the pipeline at this stage.

It emerged last month that Roma have been considering a move for Zaha as well, with the Serie A giants’ boss Jose Mourinho and the hierarchy being admirers.

What has Simon Phillips said about Zaha?

Phillips understands that Chelsea have upped the ante in their pursuit of Zaha and launched an enquiry.

The journalist believes that Tuchel will have been given a reason to feel optimistic of getting the deal over the line thanks to Palace’s response.

He is aware that Chelsea’s London rivals did not tell the Blues that the 29-year-old is not for sale, meaning a switch to Stamford Bridge may be on the cards.

Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: “Chelsea made an enquiry for Zaha last week. The response from Crystal Palace was that they didn’t shut the door.”

Where did Chelsea legend Didier Drogba start his career?

Would Zaha be interested in joining Chelsea?

Zaha has scored 86 goals and registered a further 74 assists over the course of his senior club career, but he has been starved of silverware despite his efforts.

In fact, he has only got his hands on the Community Shield and that came during his brief spell with Manchester United.

It is understood that Zaha would like the chance to compete in the Champions League and, having finished third in the Premier League last season, that is something Chelsea can offer.

As a result, the Blues will fancy their chances of signing the former Cardiff City man, who has been described by Palace manager Patrick Vieira as a ‘fighter’.
