Lewis Hamilton was called an ‘idiot’ by Fernando Alonso on the Spaniard’s team radio after the pair crashed on lap one of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa this afternoon.

The contact eventually resulted in Hamilton retiring from the race after damage to the underside of his car became too heavy to carry on.

It was a fiery encounter between the former teammates, who have plenty of history in the world of Formula One.

Following the incident, which had the Brit airborne, Alonso’s full radio message was as follows: “Yeah, what an idiot! Closing the door from the outside. I mean, we had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first.”

Alonso was clearly fuming with Hamilton, who he feels was at fault for the collision. Hamilton did leave his former McLaren teammate little room, but it went down as a racing incident, though Lewis would later take full responsibility.

Obviously, Hamilton knows how to drive properly, he’s one of the greatest to ever compete and is a seven-time world champion.

Let’s not forget, look how good he was coming from back to front over the entire weekend at the Brazilian Grand Prix last season.

On top of that, Hamilton has more wins when not starting from pole position with 42, than Ayrton Senna had starting from any position with 41.

Hamilton clearly didn’t dominate just because he could win from pole consistently, he just is that good on track.

Obviously, Alonso was speaking in the immediate aftermath so his reaction will be over exaggerated given his initial rage at the incident.

The frustrating thing for the Brit will be that he had a great start, with both Alonso and Hamilton jumping Sergio Perez at the race start before Eau Rouge with the Mercedes man looking to move up to second past Alonso when they collided.

Elsewhere, Nicholas Latifi spun, with Valtteri Bottas beaching his car in the gravel whilst taking avoiding action around the Alpine, meaning a Safety Car was needed, giving Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc a huge boost as they look to eradicate the impacts of their engine penalties.

A range of pitstops and then overtakes from the championship leader allowed him to be leading the Grand Prix on track very early on as he looks to set a new record for his lowest grid position turning into a win.
