Messi would have been hoping to hit the ground running after a disappointing 2021/22 campaign.
And he did just that as PSG destroyed Clermont Foot 5-0 at Gabriel Montpied Stadium.
Messi set up Neymar for his opener in the 9th minute. Further goals from Achraf Hakimi and Marquinhos gave the Parisians a 3-0 lead at half-time.
The Argentine then scored twice in the second half as PSG continued to assert their dominance.
Neymar unselfishly set Messi up for a tap-in in the 80th minute.
Messi rounded out the scoring with his second six minutes later – and what a goal it was.
Leonardo Parades picked Messi out with a brilliant ball over the top.
Messi controlled the ball with his chest and, with his back to goal, decided to attempt an audacious overhead kick.
The Argentine’s effort looped over the hapless Mory Diaw and into the back of the net. It was a moment of pure magic and you can view it below…
What a finish. That has to be one of the best goals he’s ever scored. It’s certainly one of the best he’s scored in a PSG shirt.
Messi was far from his best for PSG in the 2021/22 campaign, scoring just 11 times and recording 14 assists in 34 games.
While those numbers aren’t bad by any means, they are well down on what he has achieved in the past.
Now 35, some thought that Messi’s days at the very top of the game were over.
But, after success with Argentina in the summer, Messi has started the 2022/23 season with a bang. The little magician is far from finished, that’s for sure.
Could he win the Ballon d’Or in the 2022/23 season? If he continues to perform like he did against Clermont Foot, he stands a real chance of winning the prestigious trophy for the 8th time.
