Darwin Nunez goal: Fans slate Martin Tyler's commentary for Liverpool strike v Man City

Liverpool kicked off the new season in the perfect way as they beat fierce rivals Manchester City 3-1 in the Community Shield.

Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, the ever-reliable Mohamed Salah and newbie Darwin Nunez saw the Reds to a comfortable win at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp’s side tore out of the blocks in the early stages and looked far the sharper of the two outfits.

That pressure soon told as the aforementioned Alexander-Arnold curled one in to the far corner after a Salah lay off.

However, as is City’s way, they were able to force a foothold in the clash and, after a number of chances went a-begging, snatched an equaliser through Julian Alvarez.

Klopp then turned the tie on its head with the introduction of Nunez who, despite his indifferent form in pre-season, turned on the charm as he well and truly sold himself to his new fans.

The Uruguayan, who was signed in a club-record deal during the summer, looked desperate to impress and that is exactly what he did.

He constantly hassled the tiring City backline, made incisive movements and seemed to be in the right place at the right time on several occasions.

It was his header that won the penalty to restore Liverpool’s lead before Nunez himself took his debut by the scruff of the neck and nodded home from an Andy Robertson header.

It was a massive moment for the 23-year-old who wheeled off to celebrate in front of a Liverpool fan base that had descended into bedlam.

However, one man who apparently didn’t seem so pleased, according to the fans anyway, to see Nunez net a debut goal, was legendary commentator Martin Tyler.

Tyler, who has been behind the microphone for decades, has of late begun to upset fans with his response to big moments in games.

Saturday afternoon was no different with fans slating the way in which he called the Nunez goal.

Bit harsh, or do fans have a point?

Check out some of the reaction below:

There can be no doubting that Tyler is one of the true legends of football broadcasting but, at the age of 76, many fans think the time has come for him to hang up his headphones.

However, considering the man has been commentating for more than 50 years, we think he has earned the right to end his career on his own terms.
