Crazy football moments: Velez Sarsfield manager sent off for tackling Godoy Cruz player

There were truly bizarre scenes in the Argentina Primera Division last night as one manager was shown a red card for taking out an opposition player.

Velez Sarsfield travelled to Godoy Cruz in matchday 11 of 27 in the nation’s most elite league.

The away team went into the fixture in 25th place overall and so needed a big result against Cruz, who occupied a much more respectable 7th position.

How it happened

It was Cruz who seized the early advantage, scoring in the third minute courtesy of a Pier Barrios header.

But Sarsfield hit back just 12 minutes later, with former Liverpool left-back Emiliano Insua providing Atletico Madrid legend Diego Godin with the perfect platform to score.

After the dramatic start, little of note happened in terms of goalmouth action and the game descended into a feisty affair that saw no less than six cards dished out by the referee.

One of which, went to Sarsfield’s manager Alexander Medina for serious foul play towards Cruz’s Maximo Perrone.

The bizarre incident in question

In a video shared to Reddit, Perrone can be seen protecting the ball from a Sarsfield defender close to the touchline.

After being tracked by the defender, Perrone decides to flick the ball inside in a bid to find a teammate, but finds himself coming under attack from none other than the opposition manager himself.

Medina actually steps out towards Perrone and kicks his right-leg out, tripping up the Cruz player.

Perrone falls to the floor and turns around in absolute shock about what had just gone on.

Given Medina had barely even tried to conceal his actions, the move was blatantly obvious and the referee was left in no doubt about his malicious intentions.

A red card was brandished to the delight of the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas and Medina was walking before he could even muster a serious complaint.

Seriously?! What’s he thinking with that one…

The most ridiculous thing is that Perrone is going absolutely nowhere.

He’s already shifted the ball inside but it seems Medina just wanted to leave his own mark on the player regardless.

It’s certainly one of the weirdest sending offs you’re likely to see in football a long while.
