Bale, Hoddle, Son, Kane: The top 50 Tottenham players in history as voted by fans

Hoddle as a Tottenham player.

Glenn Hoddle is one of the greatest male players in the history of Tottenham Hotspur.

One of the most technically-gifted footballers to ever come out of England, Hoddle rose through the youth ranks in north London before going on to amass almost 500 first-team appearances between 1975 and 1987.

The future England manager’s time at White Hart Lane also coincided with one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history as he got his hands on the UEFA Cup and back-to-back FA Cup crowns.

Hoddle on his success at Tottenham

Hoddle shared the pitch with other club legends such as Ray Clemence, Garth Crooks, Steve Perryman and Chris Hughton in a bright spell for Spurs that delivered the silverware that fans so desperately bay for now.

And during a fascinating appearance on the High Performance Podcast, the now 64-year-old Hoddle reflected on how Spurs’ success built up from World Cup signings to cold, hard silverware.

Do you know this obscure player Tottenham signed in the January transfer window?

Chatting to Jake Humphrey and Damian Hughes, Hoddle broke it down by saying: “We were successful. We were fighting for it over the late ’70s. Ossie and Ricky come from the World Cup, which was amazing. But there was still a problem, not a problem, but we still couldn’t gel together.

“Suddenly, he bought Crooks and Archibald, which was the end of the jigsaw. We had finishers in the team, but it was this gelling. What I call the invisible walls were just being broken down between relationships between the team.

“And it was just amazing. And suddenly the confidence that came there, the feeling that we had for each other, the respect that we had for each other, we didn’t have to get on with them. Didn’t have to be best mates with everyone, but you had to respect each other.

“And suddenly it just took off and we won. We won the FA cup in ’81. We were going for four trophies in ’82, which we managed to win one. We should have really done better. Then we won the UEFA cup a year after. It was just incredible.”

Hoddle: One of Spurs’ greatest ever

While the last few years at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have undoubtedly had their moments, it’s safe to assume that many Spurs fans wish for a return to the days of Hoddle and co romping their way to titles.

And for all the top-class stars to have come through the door under Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, Hoddle’s status amongst Spurs’ greatest ever players is most certainly assured.

However, it’s one thing to be in the conversation and another to be flat-out revered as the club’s GOAT, so we couldn’t help wondering where exactly the Spurs faithful place Hoddle amongst all the icons of their illustrious history.

Who is Tottenham’s GOAT?

Interesting, very interesting.

Across the storied 140-year history of Tottenham, it’s a current player who has been crowned by fans as their greatest ever with Son – fresh from winning the Premier League Golden Boot – ruling as number one.

It’s an opinion that you’ve got to respect and clearly one shared amongst thousands of supporters, but you’ll forgive us for thinking that it might be a little premature given all the top-quality Spurs alumni.

After all, Hoddle himself might well back the silky skills, effortless control and stunning composure that he brought to north London over the offerings of Lineker, Keane and Lloris in the all-white jersey.

On the flip side, though, we like to imagine that Hoddle would feel very proud to be within a few rungs of legendary goalscorers like Greaves and Kane who will forever be lauded in the Tottenham annals.

So, while the inclusion of Bergwijn, Alli breaking into the top 30 and Son besting Kane might well spark debate, let the fans’ verdict on Tottenham’s 50 greatest players just underline how many top, top stars have called the club their home.

The supporters just probably wish that the trophies of Hoddle’s time would make a swift return…
